Job Function/Scope

Lead and motivate warehouse, quayside and transport personnel employed at Heysham Supply Base, ensuring that the customers’ requirements are met in a safe, professional and timely manner.  Might suit an appointed person looking for a change, as it will involve a 120t crane for loading and discharging vessels.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Adhere to Peterson’s Life Saving Rules at all times, and ensure that all members of your team do the same.
  • Maintain a high level of discipline and professional conduct within your team by closely monitoring team performance and ensuring that Peterson’s values and behaviours are consistently upheld.
  • Lead toolbox talks at the start of each shift (and at other times as determined by the complexity or safety criticality of the task) and ensure that you and your team are fully aware of the work instructions and risk assessments applicable to the job(s) at hand.
  • Provide a level of supervision appropriate to the safety criticality / complexity of the task, experience of the team member(s), and as required in documented work instructions and risk assessments. This includes issuing clear instructions, monitoring performance and maintaining standards.
  • Ensure that plant is operated in a safe manner at all times, including the completion of pre-use checks and adherence to the Traffic Management Plan, Lifting Plan, Work Instructions and Task Risk Assessments.
  • Ensure plant and facilities maintenance register is up to date managed effectively. Engaging with suppliers to ensure the site is compliant.
  • Use the STAR card system to report unsafe acts or conditions, or to provide praise for good safety practice, and encourage your team to do the same.
  • Plan and coordinate all work activity and ensure that your team is adequately resourced for the task(s) at hand, dealing effectively with changing circumstances and priorities as required.
  • Ensure that all members of your team are trained and competent to perform their duties, and work with administration staff to resolve any shortfalls.
  • Proactively change plans as required and provide information that will improve service delivery to customers and reduce costs to the company.
  • Play an active role in the management of the Rigging Loft.
  • Support and encourage change through teamwork, passion, effective communication and a positive approach to your work.
  • Drive high standards of housekeeping in all areas of the operation, reporting and addressing any shortfalls through the STAR card reporting system.
  • Manage customer expectations through regular and timely communication, keeping the Operations Manager (or nominated deputy) informed of any issues.
  • Provide guidance and support to administration staff in the identification and completion of facilities management tasks and the preventative and corrective maintenance of plant and equipment.
  • Manage contractors working on site, following the Permit to Work system and engaging with HSEQ as required.
  • Assist in the waste management process, including liaison with our Waste Services Provider and HSEQ as required.
  • Continually review processes and the introduction of new technologies to improve efficiencies.
  • Support tender opportunities and promote the business for new work scopes/opportunities.
  • Accurately record and control team working hours / holidays / sickness / overtime ensuring service level standards are maintained.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection process of your direct reports.
  • Ensure compliance of all warehouse and quayside operations with company and legislative standards.
  • Comply with level 2 of HSE Employee Responsibility and Accountability.
  • Comply with Level 2 of Peterson Values & Behaviours.

Performance Measure

Performance will be reviewed both formally and informally at regular intervals against objectives set during the appraisal process and against this job description.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications / Training (required for successful completion of probationary period):

  • IOSH 4-day Managing Safely Certificate
  • RTITB Supervising Forklift Operations
  • Manual Handling Training
  • Vehicle Banksman Training
  • OPITO Banksman Slinger Stage 3

Other Essential Qualifications / Training:

  • RTITB forklift license
  • Appointed Person for Lifting Operations
  • OPITO Competency Assessor Qualification
  • Management of Rigging Loft

Desirable Qualifications / Training:

  • People Management for Supervisors (or equivalent)
  • OPITO Internal Verifier
  • Clean driving license


  • Experience within a similar role (Supervisor within renewables and Oil and Gas industries.)
  • Proven ability to work in a team but crucially under own initiative
  • Operational experience in quayside and warehouse environment
  • Experience of improving process efficiencies
  • Strong communication and customer-facing skills
  • Proven ability to support a strong safety culture
  • Working knowledge of the Best Practice for the Safe Packing and Handling of Cargo Offshore
  • Microsoft Office experience
