Throughout the world fisheries are using good management practices to safeguard jobs, secure fish stocks for the future and help to protect the marine environment. Seafood standards for sustainable fishing offers fisheries a way to confirm sustainability, using a credible, independent, third-party assessment process. It means sustainable fisheries can be recognised and rewarded in the marketplace and gives an assurance to buyers and consumers that their seafood comes from a well-managed and sustainable source.

Control Union Pesca Ltd, a Conformity Assessment Body, is looking to recruit an additional Fisheries Assessment Manager to the team. This is a permanent full time post, working with other lead assessors and a further support team of experts located internationally. The role offers the opportunity to work with both new and existing clients seeking certification against standards such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), Fairtrade and Naturland, in both local and far away destinations around the world.

Our team is currently made up of individuals either located in our Lymington head office, or home based in Europe and Latin America. For the right individual a home-working arrangement could be considered, regular travel to Lymington will however be necessary for team meetings and especially during the training period.

Duties and responsibilities

Project Management

  • Project manage assigned projects, including but not limited to: following up timelines, delivering outputs on time, team leadership, controlling quality, producing reports, reviewing reports and technical inputs, resource planning, activity planning and delivery, following costs and keeping in budget, working and communicating with clients and stakeholders, monitoring and reporting progress to the Fisheries Schemes Manager.
  • Complete pre-assessment, full assessments, surveillances and other related assessments as required and within timescales specified in the Scheme Certification Requirements.
  • Ensure the effective scheduling and planning of own audits, taking into consideration geographical locations both nationally and internationally.
  • Escalating any potential issues to the Fisheries Schemes Manager.
  • Ensuring databases and profiles are updated with relevant project information in a timely manner

Point of Contact

  • Provide advice and assistance in response to enquiries received from both new and existing clients.
  • Act as a technical expert and provide back up and advice to colleagues and assessment teams.
  • Liaise with the Standard bearers for any matters relating to the interpretation of the Certification Requirements.
  • Work with the standard bearers proactively in feeding back any issues or difficulties encountered when interpreting the Certification Requirements.
  • Attending networking events and business development with new and/or existing clients.

Compliance

  • Assist the Accreditation Manager in the timely resolution of non-conformities raised either internally or by Assurance Services International (ASI).
  • Ensure that own on-going training is kept up to date as specified in the Certification Requirements.
  • Conform to the competency and qualification criteria listed in the Certification Requirements.
  • Ensure that all audit reports are completed and quickly passed to the Scheme Administrator so that they can be uploaded within the timescales set out in the Certification Requirements.
  • Assisting in the training and mentoring of junior staff members
  • And any other duties that may be agreed between the post-holder and their manager.

Qualifications and Competencies

Education

  • Postgraduate degree or equivalent in business, economics, science or technical subject (e.g. supply chain and logistics management, food/seafood science and fisheries science),

or

At least 3 years’ experience in different aspects of fisheries science and management (relevant to the task assigned under the responsibility of the team leader), which may include 3 years of cumulative experience in MSC fisheries assessment as a team member

Skills and characteristics

  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English, other languages are also advantageous.;
  • At least 3 years professional experience in one or more of the following areas: aquatic or marine resource management, marine or aquatic ecology, sustainable resource management, stock assessment, fisheries policy analyst or management;
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and deliver professional reports;
  • High level of attention to detail;
  • Excellent time and project management skills;
  • Ability to work and coordinate with teams of highly experienced fishery experts;
  • Willingness to travel when required (generally short trips for the completion of site visits).

Desirable

  • CQI / IRCA training course pass or registration as an EMS/QMS auditor with CQI/IRCA or Exemplar Global or have passed an ISO 19011 3 day course provided by a recognized CQI / IRCA or Exemplar Global training provider auditor qualification
  • Completion of any training modules relevant for the requirements of an auditor position for a relevant certification scheme.

Mobility

The role will require travelling, therefore an up to date valid passport is essential. The role will be based in the Control Union Pesca Office (Lymington, UK),
